I installed Linux for a young man recently, and I suggested instead of playing games that he try writing his own.
When that suggestions was first made to me, I had an Acorn Electron, and I started typing in BBC BASIC programs from books and playing with them.
But once Linux had installed and booted, I didn't really know how to suggest he start programming. Lacking any BASIC language in the default install, I could hardly suggest he start writing C!
Maybe Smalltalk is a good place for kids to start. Do you know of any alternatives?
